When Bjorn fought Askeladd in Vinland Saga, many viewers were confused as to why he would do that when he was already close to death. Bjorn’s been Askeladd’s right-hand man forever. He’s so loyal, even though Askeladd can be a real jerk sometimes. But then the question comes as to why they fight with each other.
When Bjorn gets badly injured in a fight, he knows he’s not gonna make it, so he wants to die like a warrior. He wants to die in battle and reach Valhalla, where fallen warriors are believed to go. In Viking culture, dying in battle was the highest honor, and Bjorn, as a warrior, wanted that honor.
But there’s more to it than just seeking a warrior’s death. Bjorn deeply respects Askeladd. Over the years, Bjorn has always stood by his side. By asking Askeladd to fight him, Bjorn isn’t just seeking a glorious death; he’s also seeking Askeladd’s acknowledgment. In Bjorn’s eyes, dying at the hands of the person he admires most is the ultimate way to go.
The fight was short. Askeladd takes Bjorn down, giving him that warrior’s death he wanted. As Bjorn’s dying, he finally says what he’s been feeling all along: that he wants to be his friend. Askeladd, also admits that he is his only friend. After all the violence this scene was really emotional.
