The story was set in a fictional universe where alchemy is the main form of practical science, the series follows the journey of Edward and Alphonse Elric, and they are searching for the philosopher’s stone to restore their bodies after a failed attempt to bring their mother back to life using alchemy.
They were abandoned by their father when they were kids. They lived with their mother in a small town called resembool. Their mother died in a terminal illness which they are trying to reverse via alchemy. The concept is pretty fascinating, it’s one type of science where you can transform physical matter one form to another.
The series is praised among the audiences for not just it’s protagonists but also how well developed the other characters are. The supporting characters have such depth to them. It’s really great. Many side characters in the series have detailed back stories that explains their motivations, fears and desires and so on.
The side characters in the story go through various changes and evolve with their new found growth very often. They face tremendous challenges, make heavy and responsible decisions and learn from their past experiences, these are the things that really makes them more defined and makes their character be something more than a 2d thing.
The dialogues in the whole series are very well articulated and well arranged. Which helps the characters to show or hide their inner thoughts purposefully and intent fully giving feelings to the characters that feels extremely natural. Through their conversions and interactions, viewers gain insight into the supporting characters’ thoughts and viewpoints.
The series has really vast character development and stronger plots than most of the similar series and finally it has a definitive ending. Though the ending has gotten mixed reception from people and even though there are a few changes I would like to make. The ending was adequate. The theme was satisfactory and very much colourful.
If you’re someone who’s been watching anime for a while and think you have a knack for it, then I’d ask you to check it out. And surely you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re a beginner, then I’d recommend it more so. The plot isn’t really that complicated that you’re going to feel lost and it isn’t so simple that you’ll be bored. As I said beforehand, brilliantly written dialogue, a phenomenal soundtrack, and very unique concepts.
